Accessibility Statement

How Golden State Explained works to make its guides usable by everyone, the standard we follow, and how to report an accessibility problem.

Golden State Explained is committed to making its guides usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or other assistive technology.

Our standard

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. In practice that means:

  • every page can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to content" link;
  • text and controls meet WCAG color-contrast ratios in both light and dark mode;
  • headings, landmarks and labels are structured so screen readers can navigate them;
  • images that carry information have text alternatives, and tables have proper headers;
  • the site respects your device's reduced-motion setting and works at 200% zoom.

Known limitations

Some pages link to court and government websites we don't control. Their accessibility is managed by those agencies. If you can't use an official portal, contact that agency directly: the DMV and EDD offer phone and in-person help, and each superior court's self-help center can help with court portals.
