Getting DMV tasks right the first time

Most trips to the DMV can now be avoided. The California DMV lets you renew registration, renew many licenses, change your address and report a vehicle sale online. The trick is knowing the rules and deadlines before you start.

A few deadlines matter more than most:

  • 5 days: a seller must file the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability after selling a vehicle.
  • 10 days: a buyer has to transfer ownership, and anyone who moves must report a new address.
  • May 7, 2025: REAL ID enforcement began for domestic flights, though a passport still works instead.
  • Every two years: most gasoline vehicles need a smog check at renewal in covered counties.

Where to start

We're not the DMV. We never charge for DMV services. Every guide links to dmv.ca.gov, the only official site, where you complete the task yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is this website the California DMV?

No. Golden State Explained is an independent guide with no connection to the DMV. We don't process transactions or charge for DMV services. You complete every task yourself on dmv.ca.gov.

What is the official California DMV website?

The only official site is dmv.ca.gov. Type it into your browser instead of clicking search ads, because the DMV warns about lookalike sites that charge unnecessary fees. See how to spot fake DMV websites.

Can I do DMV tasks online instead of going to an office?

Yes, for most routine tasks. You can renew registration, renew many licenses, change your address and report a vehicle sale online. A first-time REAL ID and license renewals for drivers 70 and older still need an office visit. See the full list of DMV online services.

What are the most important DMV deadlines in California?

Two short deadlines catch people most often. A seller has 5 days to file a release of liability after a sale. A buyer has 10 days to transfer ownership, and anyone who moves has 10 days to report a new address.

Do I need a REAL ID in California?

Only if you want to use your license to fly or enter certain secure federal facilities. A California REAL ID is optional. Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another accepted ID, like a passport, to board domestic flights. See the REAL ID document checklist.
